Why is my cat's meow suddenly different and hoarse after a new kitten?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 10 lbs

I have a male cat who is nurtured. We recently got a kitten which he did not take very well. VERY JEALOUS! He has been behaving differently which I understand and wanting to stay outside a lot more; which I also understand. But today when he came in he is meowing very differently. It's more horse sounding. This has me very concerned. Why would he sound so different all of a sudden?

Sometimes the time of a cat's meow will change based on their mood or emotion. As long as all else Is normal with him ( he's eating, drinking and normally active) I wouldn't worry. Could just be behavioral.

Occasionally a cat’s voice can change with an upper respiratory infection or some neurologic diseases, but typically you would see other symptoms as well like sneezing or eye discharge. If he seems completely normal otherwise I wouldn’t be too concerned.
