Why is my dog jumpy, sensitive, and agitated after starting steroids?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 6 months old | 80 lbs

My dog was recently put back on steriods after a long break. He is now very jumpy and yelps at most touching to his head and neck. Very very sensitive and sometimes yelps when not touched. He isn't chewing on his sore spots anymore but still seems very agitated. His hearts beating quickly and he's breathing heavily sometimes

This is a common reaction to steroids. If the steroids were only for his itching you may try to decrease his dose in half to see if you see improvement in the side effects but still see relief in his allergies. But I would still call your vet to let them know he is having this type of reaction. If he was prescribed steroids for an auto immune disorder I would contact your vet before adjusting the dose. I hope this helps.
