My puppy threw up worms. Is the dewormer working and why is he itchy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 13 days old | 85 lbs

Our puppy threw up yesterday(Sunday), the first time he threw up there was worms in it, the second time he threw up there was nothing, the 3rd there was still nothing in it! So after that happen we took him to our friend who had durvet liquid wormer (pyrante pamoate) 2X. And we gave him 1 teaspoon of it. Is it good to use? They were long and white. He hasn't pooped worms! Also when will we know the worms are dying? He hasn't pooped anything out today? He is also itchy but no ticks or fleas!

It sounds like he has roundworms. VERY common in puppies. The pyrantel is fine to use but I cannot speak to the dose as I don't know how many mg per ml it is. Use the dosing recommendations on the bottle. Puppies need to be dewormed with pyrantel at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age when they get their vaccines. If he is still showing signs of worms after those three doses then he may need additional treatment. If he is itchy, at his age it is likely fleas or mites. I would treat him for fleas even if you don't see them on him. You can also bathe him with a medicated shampoo like this one: https://www.target.com/p/veterinary-formula-clinical-care-hot-spot-itch-relief-pet-shampoo-16-oz/-/A-50298965#lnk=sametab Hope this helps. Best wishes!
