What probiotics are safe for my 3-month-old kitten with diarrhea?

Hi is it safe to give a kitten (3 months) these probiotics : lactobacillus delbruekii and lactobacillus fermentum (5 billions) i can decrease the dosage if concentration is high but are these strains safe ? i need to use them for diarrhea as she is given anti biotic Thanks in advance

This sounds like a lot although I am not sure if it will cause any harm. The normal dosage would be about 100,000,000 CFU/g. If this probiotic you are giving is not specifically made for cats I would suggest you get one made for cats. I would try a probiotic first if he is otherwise eating and acting normally. If after a few days of starting the probiotic and there is no improvement then a vet exam would be warranted. Do not give any over the counter anti-diarrheals. Fortiflora would be the best probiotic to use, in my opinion. You can use any one made for cats (no human products). I honestly cannot give you the dose information, even if you say you take full responsibility. It is illegal for me to do so, and I could lose my license to practice by giving you that information. I can tell you that metrogyl contains metronidazole, which is used in cats safely. If you are concerned about the dose and want a second opinion, I recommend making another appointment with a vet to discuss this in person with them.

I would not give human kaopectate in a kitten that young. You are better off trying pro-pectalin/probiotic paste made for animals and if the diarrhea does not clear then consult with your vet. The label instrucitons say 1cc up to every 8 hours. I suggest you try using an oral probiotic. You must use one made for cats. I STRONGLY recommend this one: ( https://www.allivet.com/p-1890-purina-pro-plan-veterinary-diets-fortiflora-cat-supplement-box-of-30.aspx ) It comes as a box of 30 packets of powder. One packet per day over the food. I would use the whole 30 days. Also, please reconsider your use of a grain-free diet. They are not recommend for use unless there is a documented grain allergy (allergy testing done by a veterinary dermatologist). These diets have been shown to cause heart disease in dogs and it is unknown at this time if cats will show any side effects. I would not risk it. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

You might contact your vet to see if it is safe to increase the dose. If it is ProPectalin AntiDiarrheal Gel, this medication can be given every 8 hours. I would continue with either her current cat food or you can do boiled chicken breast and cooked white rice for a few days, but try not to change up her food too much as that can worsen diarrhea. Other causes of diarrhea in a kitten that may need diagnosis by a vet include food intolerance, food allergies, intestinal parasites, bacterial infection, or panleukopenia.

The diarrhea could be related to the deworming. I suggest you start her on a probiotic. I like Fortiflora. I would give 1/2 packet on food twice a day for two weeks. Do not use human probiotics. I am sorry to hear about your kitten! Unfortunately, GI parasites (such as roundworms, hookworms, giardia, and coccidia) are very common in kittens as a cause of diarrhea. Some of these can be treated with over the counter dewormer such as pyrantel (round and hook worms) but the others require prescription medication for treatment. It can also be difficult to dose the over the counter medication in a tiny kitten. I would recommend an examination by your veterinarian (Bring a stool sample with you) so they can check for these parasites. In the meantime, you can try picking up a probiotic from your vet or the pet store which will often help decrease the severity of diarrhea. Fortiflora by purina is the one we use most commonly (you can get that brand at your vet's office or online).

Beautiful cat! Love the pictures. Diarrhea can be many things. Make sure you are feeding a high quality food, make sure she has been dewormed. I would recommend she be examined and have a fecal performed. I do a fecal float (to look for intestinal parasites) and a direct smear to look for bacteria like campylobacter or Protozoa like Giardia. I treat w meds based on fecal results. There are probiotics for cats that may help. A bland high fiber food may help. Beautiful kitten! Hope she feels better soon

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Izumi! She is very cute. I do not recommend giving Metamucil to her. I can't say that it's safe to give her, and you have to be very careful giving human medications to young kittens, as you can accidentally do great harm. In addition, it may not be the right treatment for her diarrhea. For example, diarrhea in kittens can be caused by intestinal worms, which Metamucil will do nothing to help with treatment. You need to take her into a vet as soon as possible, as persistent diarrhea is dehydrating. The vet can diagnose what is causing her diarrhea and can treat her for it. Best of luck.

My cat has diarrhoea. She is 9 year old Maincoon. She has very runny diarrhoea 3 times. Yesterday morning last night and this morning. She is still eating her biscuits and drinking her water. I took her off the wet food to see if this would help and
I suggest you start with trying a probiotic since she seems to be otherwise acting normally. I strongly suggest you get Fortiflora as it is by far the best probiotic in my opinion. It is a powder that you put on the food daily. It is very palatable and most cats eat it readily. You may, however, want to mix it in just a touch of the canned food since she really likes that to make sure she eats all the probiotic. I would feed the probiotic for at least 14 days even if the diarrhea clears up in a few days. If no improvement after about a week I would say you should get her to your vet for an exam and fecal test. Since she goes outside she could have picked up something like giardia, coccidia, roundworms, hookworms, etc. https://www.viovet.co.uk/PURINA_Fortiflora_Feline/c10424/ If you can't find Fortiflora you can try a different probiotic but it must be made for animals, not humans.
