My puppy has bad smelling gas and loose stool. When to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | 2 months and 14 days old | 12 lbs

My dog has had really bad smelling gas for about 2 or so weeks off and on but today (7/24) it has been happening more often and he had a loose stool today as well. Any idea what it could be? Should I take him into the vet as soon as possible or am I ok to wait until his already scheduled vet visit on August 3rd. This visit is for another round of shots. He is a lab/Aussie mix and is about 11 weeks old.

Hello! Internal parasites are very common in young dogs and can cause a lot of gas and diarrhea like you are describing. If the diarrhea is very watery/runny or he is having a lot of accidents then I would say you should take him in sooner. If he seems otherwise pretty happy and healthy you can probably wait until the vet visit on the 3rd. Be sure to have the vet run a fecal test. The dewormer that is usually given at puppy visits will not take care of all the possible types of parasites he could have. It is best to check and find out for sure what he has so you can get him treated properly. I hope this helps. Best wishes!
