My 6-month Great Dane puppy throws up whole food. Eating too fast?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 13 days old | 60 lbs

My 6m old Great Dane is vomiting up every meal for the last few days. No change in diet. She seems otherwise happy, is behaving normally and has plenty of energy. What she brings up looks exactly like what was in her bowl. Is she eating too fast or could there be another cause?

Maya could be eating too fast, you may want to try a slow feeder to see if that helps. If it's not improving I would have Maya evaluated by your veterinarian to make sure she doesn't have any congenital or developmental issues that would be causing the vomiting. You can also try to distinguish if she's vomiting versus regurgitating. Vomiting required abdominal effort (like retching or dry heaving), while regurgitation does not.

Hello, thank you for your question about Kona. Vomiting can be a sign of many underlying conditions both related to the GI tract or a systemic problem. GI problems can include recent diet changes, ingestion of foreign material, obstruction, infection, parasites, etc. Systemic problems can include liver and kidney disease, but are less likely in a puppy who is otherwise acting normal. If she is otherwise acting normal you could try offering her a bland diet such as boiled chicken and white rice/pasta to try and settle her stomach. If the vomiting continues or she becomes lethargic, develops diarrhea, etc I would recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian. Hope this helps, good luck!
