Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | spayed | 70 lbs
Hi. We're house sitting a golden retriever and in the last 24 hours she has peed upon rising from a laying down position. I believe it's uncontrollably because we have been watching her for a month and this is the first time it's happened. She seems otherwise normal. No change in appetite, no change in gait. I am a physical therapist and I know that changes in bowel/bladder function can be indicative of neurological problems. That would be my biggest concern. Thanks for time.

Usually incontinence can be due to an infection in the bladder, in this case the urine is usually quite drak and smelly. You can have it tested by a vet and treated accordingly. Alternatively in an older dog it can be due to incompetence of the sphnincter muscle, medications can help this. Other reasons can be hormonal issues or kidney problems. Neurological conditions are rare and tend to be associated with trauma and other signs such as paralysis. I would get her checked by her vet if it persists but leave any major treatment to her owners.

I would take your dog to the vet to determine exactly what is going on. From your description, the issue with her bladder could be related to urinary incontinence, arthritis in the back end (which makes it painful to posture to urinate, so the pet just holds it until they can't anymore), or even neurologic disease that affects bladder control and the movement of the hind legs. There may be more than one issue at play here. The vet should be able to sort it out.
