Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 13 years and 10 months old | 18 lbs
My dog has been throwing up and constantly having to go to the bathroom, but when she poos, hardly anything comes out. The little but that does come out is diarrhea like. She throws up, too, and sometimes coughs like she wants to throw up.

This is concerning, especially for an older dog to have severe gastrointestinal symptoms. I would first fast her for 12 hrs and then slowly introduce a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese. But then it's best to get her to a vet right away. She needs to have bloodwork analysis done and potentially further testing to determine what her underlying illness is. Once we know what is wrong with Stella then we will know what she needs to get well again. I hope she gets well soon. Best wishes and take care.

I would recommend you take Stella in to your veterinarian to be evaluated as soon as possible. If she is vomiting and having diarrhea, I am very concerned about dehydration. Older animals, like Stella, can become quite ill very quickly. They can have a harder, longer recovery compared to younger animals, so treating her quickly is a good idea. There are several reasons a dog can have vomiting and diarrhea, so a good exam and some tests are likely in order for Stella. She may have an intestinal parasites, eaten something she shouldn't have which is causing an upset intestinal tract, a bacterial or viral infection, or even another disease process like cancer going on. I am also concerned about her cough. There could be something going on in her lungs as well that needs to be addressed. She likely needs anti-nausea medication as well as medication for the diarrhea and potentially fluid treatment. I hope she is on the road to recovery soon!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry to hear how sick Stella is! Based on how severe you are describing her symptoms I think you should take her to the Vet today. That much vomiting can lead to significant dehydration. Causes can be: virus, metabolic issues (liver/kidney problems), foreign body, toxins, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion, etc. The straining to poop is because she feels the urge to go but there is little to no stool left in her. Good luck!
