Dog botfly wound ruptured. Is Neosporin safe or what should I use?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 8 years and 1 month old

My dog had a cuterebra larva that ruptured when I pulled it out. I washed the hole out and put neosporin on it, wrapped it up. Is there something that I should be putting on there instead of neosporin?

So sorry this happened to Missy Belle. You did exactly right. I wouldn't do anything else at this point. You can apply the Neosporin twice a day until healed. Keep a good eye on that wound as the "juice" from a ruptured cuterebra can be toxic to the surrounding tissues. You did great by flushing it out! If the area starts to look more swollen, red or has yellow/green discharge from it you will have to take her to the vet for some additional treatment. She may need antibiotics and anti-inflammatories to help it heal. I hope this was helpful. Best wishes to you guys!
