How to treat a kitten's flaky skin, hair loss, or ringworm at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 5 lbs

I have befriended a ferrel kitten. She has flaky, dry skin all over her head and ears and some hair loss. I suspect ringworm or parasites. How can I treat these conditions myself? Low on funds but want to see kitten get better.

There are limited medicines you can give cats from over the counter but the place to start is a bath in baby shampoo to get the scales and dandruff off. Second you can get ear mite medication and dewormer me from a local pet store. They also sell flea medicine such as advantage or frontline that is safe for over 8 weeks of age. If it is ringworm then it is contagious to people and other animals and will need a prescription from a vet for proper medicine.
