My dog's leg surgery stitches opened; skin too tight to re-stitch.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 6 months old | 60 lbs

My male pitbull had a tumor removed from the outside of his back leg last week. It was a pretty large surgery cut so the skin was pulled pretty tight when it was sutured back together. A few days ago he managed to open up the sutures in the center of the area. The skin is so tight I think if it was resutured it would pull open again. What can be done?

I would take Knuckles back to see the surgeon. It may be stitchable in a different way, or the wound could heal by 2nd intention but this would require regular dressing. There is the option of a skin graft but this would depend on the wound and may need to be referred.
