Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Newfoundland | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 85 lbs

My dog is a 1 year and a half old Newfoundland she weighs 85 lbs and is showing her ti cage after being shaven for the summer. She does not eat very well I mean she eats very little and doesn't seem too excited about her dog food We have tried various flavors and brands and also tried mixing her dry food with canned and simply does not gain a pound What can I do to help her eat and be at a healthy weight?

Hello, it sounds like Katara hasn't been eating well for some time. Reasons for a decreased appetite in a dog can be associated with problems within her Stomach and intestines, or, with problems outside of her GI tract like her liver, kidneys, adrenal glands, and even her reproductive tract since she is not spayed. I would consider visiting your veterinarian to have all of these organs assessed. However, if you do not think she is ill, but simply a finicky eater, then perhaps you may try enticing her food with turkey ham, cottage cheese low fat, boiled rice, or boiled chicken.
