Why is my puppy bleeding from his penis on allergy steroids?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boerboel | Male | 128 lbs

Hi there. Ive got a puppy (10 months old). The vet and myself think has a pollen allergy. Ive been prescribed medrone for the allergy. His paws were rather red, so the breeder also said to give antihisthamine aswell. He's 57 kg and ive been giving him medrone 2mg twice daily along with citrizine hydrochloride twice a day. But today ive noticed fresh bright red blood coming from the tip of his penis??? Should i be worried. Thanks and kind regards, jason.

I'm sorry to hear of your concerns as Fonzi. Blood from the penis can occur due to urinary tract infections, prostate issues or trauma. Given Fonzi's history and age, I think of urinary tract infection is most likely as steroids can suppress the immune system and make a dog more likely to develop an infection. I would recommend that you contact your veterinarian. They will likely recommend an examination and urinanalysis to better determine the cause for the blood.
