My dog's nail broke, quick exposed, and flesh is hanging out. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered

Our dog broke one of his nails. It's happened before and we dealt with it it fine, but this time the kwik itself seems to have broken? The nail is still attached and whole and the tip has some flesh still attached, but after a bit it gets hollow, as the rest of the flesh has been seperated and is now hanging out. I am not sure what to do? Already disinfected it, mostly stopped the bleeding and wrapped it up. Will the flesh grow back together?

Hi there! Poor Nasus! Ok, so how everyone manages these varies. Usually these are caused by things like excessive digging and are trauma induced-bandaging will help keep it from getting dirty and exposed to the elements. Normally they will heal but usually the nail sloughs entirely in my experience. I usually recommend chlorhexadine soaks and antibiotics as well as pain medications. Your doctor can take a look and make sure the nail doesn't actually need to go ahead and be removed, and can prescribe these things for you. I hope this helps!
