Why do my dogs have tapeworms despite flea treatment & cooked food?

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 11 months old | 17 lbs

How can both my dogs have tapeworms if it cant be transmitted from dog to dog ? Also they dont have flees they are both treated for flees, can it be from the chicken i cook for them and thats all they pretty much eat :( im so confused also i got the drontal plus for both my dogs and im hoping it works soon. :(

Tapeworms can be transmitted from fleas, raw meat /fish or rodents. I recommend you take a sample to be identified by your vet in order to investigate the source. Drontal plus should be effective and should be repeated after one month

    Unfortunately this will not cure the tapeworms. They need praziquatel, which is a prescription medication. You can get it in the form of Drontal from the vet. I would take them both into the vet, and the vet can give them the pill so you don't have to worry about it. You will also need to treat them both for fleas, as fleas are intermediate hosts of tapeworms. Best of luck.

It is easy to catch tape worm. Even if your dogs are treated against fleas, there sometimes is a live infected flea hopping on and before it dies, your dog may eat it while grooming and so get infected. It is not a big problem for the dog but rather more for us, since it is gross when the proglottids crawl out. I suggest you worm your other dog as well (you need a wormer that has praziquantel as an ingredient). If the diarrhea does not go away within two days, feed boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat for a few days, then transition back into their regular food. If the diarrhea does not subside after the bland diet, then you should have your dogs seen by a vet.

It is not typical to have side effects a week after being treated for tapeworms so there could be something else going on. If he hasn't had a stool sample tested for parasites then you should take a sample to your vet for testing. He could have additional parasites and need a different dewormer. Continue to monitor him and if his signs continue or progress then he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. Dogs get tapeworms from eating fleas so he should be treated for fleas with a medication, like NexGard, Frontline, Bravect, etc. Hope he feels all better soon!

Asya has what looks like Tapeworms and if she's got them them so does Chance. What do I need to do/ what meds can I buy to get rid of them? Neither take pills well and I'm thinking of drops for their water?

My dog was treated for tapeworm 10 days ago but she still has signs of the tapeworm. Is this normal?
Yes. This is why we recommend multiple dewormings. The dewormer only kills the parasite at certain stages. If all the worms present in her body are not in the same stage of their life cycle when you administer the dewormer the new worms can "hatch" and the dog is still infected. Remember, dogs get tapeworms by eating infected fleas (fleas that carry the tapeworm larvae) so you need to get the fleas under control as well. She could have also been re-infected since you gave the dewormer. The worms you describe sound like Tapeworms and these come from fleas. These worms are not treated by the product you have been giving him. Instead he needs Praziquantel (Drontal) to successfully treat these worms or a similar product that is labeled for tapeworms. You may be able to find something similar to this at your local pet store, but you vet definitely carries this int he clinic. You should also treat Thor with a monthly flea preventative to avoid re-infection, because pets get tapeworms by ingesting an infected flea.

Dogs get tapeworms from ingesting a flea (usually because they are chewing the skin because of the flea). So there are two steps to treat tapeworms: 1) a dewormer to kill the tapeworm and 2) flea prevention to prevent further infestation. Both of these treatments can be purchased from your veterinarian. You will not need to treat your house for tape worms, however, since fleas are the vector for tape worm, you will need to do flea prevention. Here is how: Unfortunately fleas only hop on the body of your pet when they want to feed, then they hop off again and stay in your pet's environment. So you need to treat all pets in the household as well as the environment (which contains the fleas, their eggs and larvae). Flea treatment:  1) Get some flea medication such as a Flea spray or a spot on from a pet shop or your veterinarian and apply monthly 2) get flea powder, put some in your vacuum cleaner bag and vacuum your house and furniture and also non-carpeted areas frequently to remove flea larvae and eggs which live off house dust., Dispose of the bag in the trash outside. I have a 7 yr. old German Shepherd that I'm sure has a tape worm. Do they ever go away on their own? And my 3 yr old cat continually keeps a tape worm in which I give him Profender over and over. It gets rid of it but comes right back even though
No, they don't go away on their own. I recommend giving them Drontal, it is an excellent dewormer that kills tapeworms. You can get it from your vet, so I would take them both into the vet to get this prescription medication.

I recently adopted Koby 4 days ago and I found out he has tape worms after taking him to the doctor today and he was treat but prior to that the vet had already given him pyrantel but he doesn't have any fleas on him so how could he be infected ? And
Fleas hop on and off for feeding. You do not have to find fleas. The tapeworm is dead soon after your dog got the wormer against tape worm. Pyrantel will not work against tape worm, he needs to be wormed with a wormer called praziquantel. There is no need to treat your carpet for worms and worm eggs. Tape worm will not affect humans.

I'm not sure what deworming treatment you used, but if it didn't contain praziquantel, then it will not kill tapeworms if Willow has them. Tapeworms require praziquantel to kill. In addition, the life cycle of intestinal worms is around 2-3 weeks, so when a puppy does have worms, he needs to initially be dewormed every two weeks at first to kill all the worms. The first treatment kills the adults present while the second one kills the worms that had not yet hatched at the time of the first treatment. After that, he can be dewormed monthly. I would give him another deworming treatment now, one that includes praziquantel such as Drontal. Give him another dose in two weeks, and then deworm him monthly until he is six months old. After that, he should be dewormed every three months. As a side note, it is never recommended to give dogs pork. Raw pork contains parasites called trichinella spiralis larvae, which can cause the parasite infection known as trichinosis. In addition, po
