Why are my cat's creatinine levels high after a UTI or cystitis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 10 years and 6 months old | 19 lbs

Can a uti after a long bout of cystitis raise creatinine levels in cats? My little guy has had a rough month and a half. He had his first cystitis flare up, followed by a uti, and now his creatinine level went from 2 to 2.6. Bun is 28. Was this the antibiotics or the infection?

Hi. Antibiotics wouldn't cause an increase in BUN. It is most likely secondary to the UTI. Although, as kitties get older, primary kidney disease is possible as well. I would meet with your veterinarian to make a monitoring and diet plan.

if the infection was in the kidney then it could potentially cause an elevation in creatinine. A bladder infection doesn't usually cause an elevation in kidney values. It might be a good idea to repeat the kidney values in a few weeks to see if it continues to be abnormal. It would also be helpful to know the urine specific gravity because if the urine is concentrated then the elevation could be secondary to dehydration and not a kidney problem.
