My German Shepherd puppy has gastroenteritis. When will he recover?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 10 days old | 7.5 lbs

My GSD of 70 days old has been diagnosed with Gastroenteritis. Did the test for parvo and it is fortunately negative. I am giving support treatment of rehydration by fluids. 200ML of RL, 30ML of metrix, an injection of rantac and antibiotics. 2 days of treatment is done. How many more days can i expect for it to recover and will it hopefully recover?

That is good that he doesn't have parvo but could have a different virus. He could also have an intestinal parasite so he should be tested for parasites, as well. It is difficult to predict how long it will take him to recover because every dog is different but I would expect him to start showing some improvement within a few days of starting treatment. Hopefully, with the treatment he will fully recover, although I am not sure of the cause of the gastroenteritis. If he doesn't start improving then your vet may need to do additional testing and add some additional medications. Hope he gets better soon! He is very cute!
