Does vegetable oil really work to get rid of mites on my rabbit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 8 months old

So I saw this thing that says "if your rabbit has mites, put vegetable oil, and it will clear it up (twice a day) and once a week for prevention" is this true? Also, I have the vegetable oil all set up in a squirt bottle, how do I apply it? Squirt it down the side? Just squirt it in?

Unfortunately that is not true and vegetable oil is unlikely to be very effective. Mite treatment and prevention can be obtained with appropriate medications commonly based on ivermectine. Ask your local veterinarian about it. Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.
