My male rats penis is swollen and bleeding. What could cause it and how would I treat it

It sounds like your rat may have had some trauma to his penis or he may have a urinary tract infection. If he is housed with other rats I would recommend separating him for the time being. I would also recommend taking him to the vet to be checked out. If he does have a urinary tract infection he will need to antibiotics to help clear it up. Your vet can also prescribe some pain medication for him.

Hi there! That sounds like a worry for sure! I wonder if he could have a bladder infection, or, like you said, maybe some sort of a trauma. It would be a great idea to have him checked out by your vet to see if he may need some medication?

If she hasn't been mated, a rectal prolapse is a more likely cause of the bleeding than the 2nd most likely cause...a vaginal prolapse. A rectal prolapse would look like an outpocketing of tissue from the anus. Application of neosporin and Preparation H ointment (alternating) twice daily each may be helpful. With some cases you can actually manually reduce the prolapse by pushing it back in. I recommend examining the area closely and if the above steps do not improve her symptoms, perhaps a friend can take her to a vet with you.

Thanks for reaching out about Peris and including a photo. Enlarged testicles or scrotum can be due to the accumulation of fluid, infection, hernia or neoplasia (tumors). A veterinary visit is recommended to assess the condition and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Applying a warm compress might help reduce swelling but is not a cure. Good luck.

My rabbit had blood in his hutch I checked him and found that his penis is bleeding.
Without a picture, my only recommendation for anything that is actively bleeding is to seek out a veterinarian right away. This is particularly true for small mammals such as rabbits as they do not have much blood to begin with. If it is possible that Chocolate could have been bitten by something on the penis, this can definitely become problematic. Often wounds to the penis can result in an inability to urinate, which is obviously an emergency. I would not wait on this one very long, unless the bleeding is well controlled and your rabbit is urinating normally. Hope this helps.

Poor guy! I'm sorry to hear that's happening. Looking at the pictures, and depending on his age, I would be concerned it may actually be a tumor that has broken open. (This is more likely if he is an older guy). It may also be that there was some trauma, or was a small trauma that became an abscess or infection. Regardless of the cause, call your vet and get him in as soon as you can. At the very least, your vet can give you some medication to make him more comfortable. There is no way to effectively bandage this area at home, as we don't want to block his penis, because if urine collected in a bandage it would only make things worse. Please refrain from giving him any over the counter pain medication until you see your vet. Best of luck to you both. Thanks for asking Boop by Petco!

The red tears are due to the secretion of porphyrins. This typically happens during times of stress or illness. If your rat has bloody urine, you should have her examined by your veterinarian to diagnose a UTI or a more serious condition such as a bladder tumor.

Ugh, it sounds like a problem with the urinary bladder or prostate if your pet is not neutered. I would advise you to take him to veterinarian immediately. If the swelling gets worse he may not be able to urinate. Additionally, he will probably my pain medication. Hope he feels better soon!

Hi, it is not normal to bleed so profusely , I would definitely have him reassessed ! Could it be that the penis has been swollen for some time ? If so, it is better to have him checked over sooner rather than later as permanent damage to the penis can occur that can eventually end up in a an operation. Remember that Euro’s breed tolerates pain much better than other breeds but even a small injury causes a lot of pain in this area which is extremely well vascularised. Hope you can have him checked over ASAP.

Hi Natalie, i have a feeling she might have injured her tail, try checking for a wound or a cut on the tail. if this is not it, it might be a urinary infection. in both cases she will need to be seen by a vet and she will need a course of antibiotics.

Your cat may have a serious urinary issue going on. If he does not seem miserable right now, is bright and alert and able to move around, and is not in or around the litter box straining to urinate and meowing over and over again, you might be ok to wait until the vet is open. If he goes in to the litter box and vocalizes, or strains like he is trying to pee but can't, or seems sick in any way, he may have a blocked bladder and this is an emergency. Neutered males cats, especially ones that are overweight, are at risk of having urinary tract disease, and the worst thing with this problem is that sometimes small bladder stones can collect in the urethra/penis and they are unable to urinate. This makes them very sick and ultimately the bladder can rupture, leading to death. Or, he may still be able to urinate a small volume, enough to keep the bladder from getting huge, but still be very painful and in need of medication.
