Can hypothyroidism cause labored or raspy breathing in my dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 12 years and 8 months old | 70 lbs

Female chow mix recently diagnosed w/Cushings disease & started on meds 1 week ago. Then diagnosed w/hypothyroidism & started on meds Monday. Has been vet hosp a week. Today she was aggressive & trying to snap them, which she's never done. Called & told us we could pick her up. When we got there, told us she's got labored/raspy breathing (which is a sign of hypo). I can't find that listed. Is it a hypo related problem? Kennel cough?

Hi. Unfortunately, to determine the cause, she would need a full work up. Breathing problems are not typical of hypothyroidism. Panting can occur with Cushings or hypothyroidism, but not respiratory raspy/labored breathing. I would have them do chest radiographs as soon as possible.
