What's the best way to introduce a new puppy to my cat safely?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Female | spayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 13.6 lbs

within the next month or so, i'm going to start looking for a cockapoo puppy? we have a 1 1/2 year cat? (although she's domestic, i'm about 95% positive she may have some maine coon in her, personality/looks wise). should i be worried about any problems of them getting along? do you have any advice on how to introduce/any important tips? i want to make it the healthiest and friendliest environment for our family! i would greatly appreciate it. thank you!!

If Spaghetti hasn't been around dogs much expect her to be a bit upset at first. Make sure she has a room or area of the house that is puppy free where she can escape from the puppy if she wants to. Make sure the puppy can't access her food or litter box. If you need to change any of her areas do it now and get her acclimated before bringing home a new puppy. This article has little info on introducing cats and dogs. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=1384 You may also want to get feliway diffusers for the house to help decrease spaghetti's stress. She has a great name! Good luck
