Why is my dog losing hair in small spots on his hips and back end?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Jax is having some hair loss. I just noticed it today, two spots on his back end. One on each side of his hips. The fur is really thin but not quiet down to skin yet. Hes a digger, he chews in that area often but not enough to cause that much fur damage. Each spot is about the size of a dime. What could be causing it? Theres no fleas, no discharge, no flakey skin, just fur loss. & what can i do from home to help?

Without seeing Jax it is hard to say. I know you haven't seen fleas, but fleas don't have to spend much time on a dog to cause scratching. Other things like microscopic mites, allergies and metabolic problems can also cause hair loss. There isn't much you can do from home but I would recommend making an appointment with your vet to better narrow down the cause.
