Why did my dog suddenly go blind, vomit, drink excessively, and die?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 8 years and 2 months old | 8.5 lbs

My baby went blind very quick and 1 week later she stopped eating, she only drank water excessively just to throw it up right after, she did this for 3 days and the next morning she was gone. The vet was closed cause she got sick on Fri. I woke up Mon. at 7:50 and planned to take her that morning but she died in my arms around 8. I am blaming myself and want to die, I just need to know what it could have been. I need peace of mind. I love my dog as much as my own child and it's killing me.

There is no way to know for sure but diabetes, an infected uterus, kidney disease or a possible brain lesion are all options. Diabetes can cause cataracts which leads to sudden blindness along with drinking excessively and vomiting when they ketoscidosis from it. It usually requires days to weeks of hospitalization when that advanced. Kidney disease also causes drinking a lot with vomiting but unrelated to blindness. Since she is not fixed, her uterus can get an infection called a pyometra which allows it to fill with pus. It requires emergency surgery to fix. This too can cause drinking a lot and vomiting. I am sorry you lost your baby and hope this helps bring you comfort.
