My Maine Coon mix cat seems big. Is he overweight despite eating less?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 11 months and 27 days old | 13 lbs

Mars was really underweight when I adopted him so I was worried about weight gain constantly. Now, he's being fed less than the recommended amount on the food bag but he's really disproportionate- He has had the big ears, big eyes, big feet, thing since he was a kitten and the vet said he might be mixed with Maine Coon which means he's a bit bigger than a regular male cat. Is he overweight? He plays and sleeps and runs like a normal cat, I'd just like to know. (One picture of him as a kitten)

Mars is super handsome! He was a really adorable kitten. Yes, I would say he is overweight. This article may help you out: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=1+2230&aid=660 When you feed your cat based on the recommendations on the bag you have to keep two things in mind. 1. You need to feed your cat based on his "ideal" weight and not his current weight. 2. You need to understand that those feeding recommendations on the bag are for unspayed/unneutered cats so with him being neutered you will need to feed him to the lower end of the recommended feeding range. I hope this helps. Best wishes to you and Mars!
