My pug mix looks mangy like her sick littermate. Is it hereditary?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 5 months old

Hello, I had a dog that we had to put down a year ago and she was starting to look mangy and would throw up water and she would not eat. She smelled really bad and I gave her a bath and she still smelled awful. Now my other dog which is the same age as the dog that we had to put down, is starting to look the same mangish way, I have not found any throw-up and she does not smell. They are both part pug and share the same mother.

I'm sorry to hear of your concerns with Ted. If you feel that her condition is declining -especially if she appears to be in a similar condition to her littermate that passed away last year then I would recommend that you have her seen by veterinarian. There are many potential causes for the symptoms you describe;however, if it truly is the same process affecting two littermates I would suspect something hereditary such as liver or kidney problems or a birth defect of some sort. Your veterinarian can perform a thorough physical examination and may recommend blood work to get a better idea of what is going on.
