My dog has seizures. Can he safely get anesthesia for teeth cleaning?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | neutered | 11 years and 8 months old | 16 lbs

My dog is going in to have his teeth cleaned in about 2 weeks. The vet checked him over and said he is in great health and should be fine for the anesthetic. However, when I got home, I remembered that I forgot to tell him that he has seizures once every few months. I'll definitely mention this to my vet before he gets put under for the cleaning, but I'm just wondering if there is any danger associated with anesthetic and pets that have seizures?

There are certain preanesthetic medications that your doctor will avoid if he knows Casper has seizures. Definitely be sure to mention it to the vet when you drop him off. I would also recommend having your vet do some preanesthetic blood work to make sure there is nothing to worry about. If anything shows up in the blood work your vet can make changes to the anesthetic protocol to make sure it is safe for Casper.
