My dog has diarrhea with mucus, normal energy. Should I go to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 11 months and 11 days old | 46 lbs

My dog yesterday vomited and then was followed by a few periods of diarrhea, today she had a normal stool, followed by more diarrhea with mucus in it. She had only gotten white rice today. And throughout has had normal appetite and energy. Should I take her to the vet or can I wait it out a bit longer?

If the vomiting has stopped and the diarrhea has seemed to improve then you could continue with the bland diet (boiled chicken and white rice is good) and see if she continues to improve. You could also add a probiotic to her diet to see if that helps, too. If her signs do not completely resolve in 24-48 hours or she becomes lethargic then she needs to go to your vet.
