My dog has CMO. What are the risks of long-term meds vs. steroids?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | West Highland White Terrier | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 15 days old | 17 lbs

My WHW terrier has CMO temporal bulla foss, bilateral, she was born Oct 5, 2016. She is on anti-inflammatory & pain medications. She has been on these meds since she was 4 months of age. My question is in regards to changing her meds to steroids. I am concerned about her being on these meds for an extended period of time and the side affects. From what I have read the information indicates either one treatment or the other and I would like some feedback as to concerns with either treatment.

Both steroidal and non-steroidal antiinflammatory medications carry risks and side effects, steroids generally have a higher risk profile and are not used if other options are working and allowing her to eat. Most cases of cmo resolve as the dog approaches maturity but flare ups may occur until this age.
