My Maine Coon cat vomits and burps. Is it dental pain or tummy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 3 years and 6 months old | 17 lbs

3 y/o Maine Coon male, indoor only, eats Royal Canin Maine Coon dry kibble (big) and drinks a lot of water. Avg. once every 1.5 wks he will vomit food, partially chewed chunks or semi-digested. Also burps at least 1-2 times/day, audible noises from his tummy. Chronic inflamed gums are managed w brushing, otherwise normal behaviour & uses litter box regularly. Theory: teeth hurt so doesn’t chew food, swallows air, then has upset tummy and throws it up, or caused by something more serious? Thanks

I think your theory makes some sense - it's possible that some oral pain is changing his behavior when he's eating. It is also not unusual for some cats to eat their food too quickly, and some cats do better with dry food as compared to wet or vice versa. The burping however sounds more like he might have some stomach upset. This could be from a food sensitivity, parasites, or something like inflammatory bowel disease. I would recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian for an examination and to discuss testing if indicated.
