My 1 Year old German Sheppard just ate a short rib bone about the size of a thumb, should I be concerned about it blocking or damaging his digestive tract?

Hi, thank you for reaching out about Duke. These types of bones twist and turn as they go down the digestive tract. Many times they do not cause any problems, however they can get stuck at any given point (in the esophagus, stomach, or intestines). At this time I would watch him closely at home over the next 24-48 hours. If any vomiting, regurgitation, "coughing" - possible bone stuck in esophagus, or decrease in appetite occurs please have him seen right away by his veterinarian so they can assess if the bone is stuck. If he continues to have a normal appetite and normal behavior at home, most likely his body is digesting the bone without any problem. Please let us know at anytime if you have any further concerns or questions and best of luck with Duke.
