My dog's neck lump isn't improving. Should I get a second vet opinion?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 2 years and 1 month old | 63 lbs

Our 2 year old golden doodle developed a lump on the right side of his neck. He had a fever and was just not acting normal. We went to the vet a week ago and we're told it could be a lymph node or a blocked salivary gland. They gave him antibiotics and 3 days of pain medicine. He doesn't seem to be getting better and is lethargic. He acts like he is miserable. Should we go back and ask for a different vet for another opinion?

Yes! If there is no improvement then he definitely needs a recheck. They can always aspirate or biopsy a sample of that growth to determine if it is a lymph node or a salivary gland because it may need a surgery ir simply stronger antibiotics. Blood work may not be a bad idea either to make sure there isn't a systemic infection.
