Pet's info: Dog | Silky Terrier | Female | spayed | 4 years and 2 months old | 7 lbs
My 4 yr old silky terrier coughs quite often but only during the night. She had a kennel cough vaccine 1 week ago. We have only had the dog for a month so have no past history of coughing. She sleeps indoors in a warm bed.

If she was an import, she should be screened for lungworm and heartworm. Chest x-rays can be done to assess the heart and lungs. If the heart is enlarged, an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) should be done to assess cardiac architecture and function, especially if she is exercise intolerant. The kennel cough vaccine can cause a mild cough but it would be all day, not just at night.
