What are these itchy bumps on my Shih Tzu's back causing hair loss?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 15 lbs

My dog is small and maybe weights around 12 to 15 pounds. He's a shit Sue and he has bumps on his back mostly. He has one that resently poped and now it's kinda gone. But he has no hair in that area anymore. I'm scared that it might be soemthing bad. Maybe you please help me. He often gets ichy in that area and tends to scratch a lot.

It could just be a ruptured cyst or some type of mass. Your vet can do a needle aspirate to diagnose the exact cause and determine if there is anything to worry about. If needed, your vet could remove the bumps. If the lesions appear infected then he may need an antibiotic to treat. Since he seems itch, you could bathe him with a medicated dog shampoo like Epi-soothe and see if that helps.

Hi there. These sound like sebaceous cysts. They may rupture on their own and some require antibiotics if they are itchy and the dog is scratching them open. Many of our dogs have skin allergies-this condition can be worked up by your local veterinarian and can help you make your pet much more comfortable. I hope this helps!
