My kitten has an eye infection and is lethargic. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Balinese | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 17 days old | 3 lbs

My boy kitten is about 14-16 weeks old and he started by being a little lethargic but I think that was because he was infested in fleas but now he's flea combed and medicated but now it's like a week later and he's better but for about 4 days he has an eye infection and when he was lathargic he had a little type thick mucus string come out his but and then his but hole was reddish the next day which went away by the next day, what's wrong with him ( his right eye btw)

Hi there. Upper respiratory infections in kittens are very common (whether viral or bacterial in origin). If you are noticing purulent discharge it is time to take him in to see your veterinarian. Likely he will get a course of antibiotics and whatever else your veterinarian deems appropriate treatment. They can get quite ill if not treated quickly at such a young age. I hope this helps.
