My cat has ringworm. Is 250mg terbinafine 2x daily too much?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 3 years and 11 months old | 13 lbs

My cats have ringworm and were Rxd 250mg terbinafine 2xday for 2 weeks. Everywhere I've read says this is too much. I want a second opinion. Is this dose safe?

The most common dose that I could find in veterinary drug books is 20-40 mg/kg once a day. Another dose I found says that cats >5.5 kg receive 1 tablet (250 mg) every 24 hours. So for your cat, weighing 13 pounds, a dose of 250 mg once a day sounds correct. You should call your vet and double check that he/she actually wanted to use the drug twice a day.
