Is elevated liver enzymes common after dog bee sting and steroids?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Basset Hound | Female | spayed | 2 years and 5 months old | 55 lbs

Saturday my dog got stung by bees and swelled up and hives. Took her to er vet and she received Benadryl and steroids. Went back yesterday becgase she wasn't eating and didn't have much energy. Blood work showed elevated liver enzymes and protein but er vet said that was normal protein because of bee venom; and liver enzymes due to combination of allergic reaction and steroids. Her original vet is closed today for vacation. Is this common after reactions?

Hi there. Sorry to hear about Harper! Yes, these things are fairly normal for serious reactions to venom. Being an emergency vet-we see quite a few cases like this. Likely you will be asked to recheck bloodwork in about a month to make sure everything is going back to normal, as long as otherwise your pup is asymptomatic. I hope this helps!
