Why is my kitten lethargic, not eating, gassy, and I feel her gut?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed

My kitten has become very lethargic and isn't eating. She also has really bad gas and I can perfectly feel her intestines through her stomach. Could I get some insight?

I'm sorry to hear Friday isn't feeling well. Gas pain can be very uncomfortable and could be what is making her lethargic. There are numerous underlying causes of gas and lethargy in kittens, and an exam can tell us a lot as to what is going on. I would be concerned about possible intestinal parasites, as many kittens are born with worms and need to be given a deworming medication to clear them out. She also could have a viral infection or a bacterial overgrowth of her intestinal tract that is causing the problems. The majority of owners should not be able to feel intestines in their pet, so I am worried that you are feeling something abnormal in her abdomen. Sometimes with inflammation the intestines will feel "ropey" when we palpate them. I think Friday needs to be seen by your vet for some supportive care (deworming, fluids, etc), and to try to figure out what the underlying cause is so she can get back on track.
