My old dog's bloodwork is bad for surgery. Is fluid therapy safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello,My dog is a 12 year old malamute. He has regular bloodwork tests and although they are not bad they aren't quite good enough results for my vet to allow him to have surgery to a. clean and polish his teeth to remove plaque and b. to remove a small growth(benign) on his eyelid. The vet suggested if we really want to do the above surgery that we can if we let my dog stay at the vets for a few days after the surgery to do fluid therapy. Thoughts please.Thank you for accepting my question.

This sounds like a good recommendation from your vet. The goal will be to keep your dog under anesthesia for the shortest possible time using anesthesia drugs that are gentle to the kidneys and liver. 24hrs of IV fluids after anesthesia can help his body to eliminate the anesthesia more quickly and support the circulation to his internal organs.
