My newly adopted tabby has diarrhea on Z/D diet. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 4 years and 6 months old | 13 lbs

We adopted a 4 year old tabby 2 days ago. Shelter stated he was having some loose stools and the Z/D prescription diet was working. His first stool since we got him was semi hard, semi not. It broke apart upon scooping. His second BM was diarrhea. His third was diarrhea, not in the litter box and had some clear mucus present. We did not change his food from the Z/D. He had a small amount of pumpkin mixed into his food this morning. He ate maybe a 1/4 tsp.

withhold food for 8 hours then offer him boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if he is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food. If he continues vomiting or is not eating, take him to the vet to get treatment.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Remus. He may be stressed out from moving in with you. Continue the z/d and the pumpkin. If the diarrhea continues take him to the vet to get some medications to help with the diarrhea. Good luck!
