My new dog is losing hair. Is it mange? How do I stop the spread?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 13 days old | 35 lbs

I just got a dog from a friend that was not taking care of him properly. That's why we took him, he's about 11 months old. I noticed he is losing alot of hair, I believe it's mange. I don't want my other two dogs to catch so I have him isolated (feel horrible) but what's the best way to get rid of it? Is there a pill? We are getting his weight back up, gained 10 pounds in 3 weeks. Now he's at a healthy weight. He is pit/lab.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You are very kind to take in Bear There are many reasons for him to have hair loss. The contagious mite is scabies and it is VERY itchy. If he isn't scratching it may not be mange from scabies. There is another mite called demodex that is non-contagious. Your other dogs can not get it from him. I would check him for fleas. His hair loss could also be from a poor diet and he just needs more time with a good diet. He could also have allergies or a skin infection. The other skin condition he could have that is contagious would be ring worm (fungus). I recommend taking him to the Vet this week to rule out contagious skin diseases and get him started on proper medications! Good luck!
