Why is my dog with Cushings limping, panting, and lethargic?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 36 lbs

Susie has been limping slightly, showing signs of discomfort with her right front paw. No signs of injury are visible to her leg or paw pad. She has been lethargic and recently has been having a runny wet nose. She has also been panting lightly and intermittently. During a walk this morning she had to take several breaks and rest. She has Cushings disease for which she has been on Vetoryl for over a year and levels seem to be under control at last check up.

Poor girl. If there is no obvious external injury, then I would be concerned that either the bone or the joint is affected. Some possibilities are: bone cancer, bone cyst, bone abscess, subluxation and a bone infection or even hairline fracture. If the pain has been persistent for more than 24 hrs, then I would highly consider having her examined by your vet to have radiograph imaging done to determine the underlying cause of her pain. I hope that Susie is able to get some relief soon. Until she is able to be seen you can try doing a cold compress followed by a warm compress on the painful areas. Also soaking her in a warm water Epsom salt bath for 5-10 minutes can help alleviate some of her discomfort. Best wishes and take care.

She may have a subtle sprain or strain injury, the discomfort could be maling her pant. I would let her rest 24 hours and if she has got no better go to the vet just in case something else is going on.
