My rabbit's neuter incision is red, swollen, and bleeding. Infected?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

I have a rabbit that has just been neutered and I am worried about infection. I try to clean the wound as best as I can but he either runs off or licks off what ever I put on him. I thought about just giving him a warm shallow bath every morning and night but I am also worried about him moving too much in the tub. Help!! He's incision is also red, swollen and still slightly bleeding.

I would not recommend bathing any animal within 14 days after any surgery. If you see a little blood and can dab it with a clean damp cloth that is ok. If there is excessive bleeding, discharge, bruising, swelling, or if Fezzik is licking or biting at the site you should contact your veterinarian who may elect to treat with antibiotics, pain medications, or help you come up with a plan to prevent him from bothering the surgical site. It is not uncommon, however for there to be a small amount of redness and inflammation, even a few drops of blood at a surgical site for a few days after surgery. Good luck with Fezzick!
