My dog fought a raccoon. Is rabies a risk even with recent shots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | spayed | 52 lbs

Hello, My dog got into a fight with a raccoon about 20 minutes ago and I'm concerned about rabies. I heard her yelp a couple of times but can't find any clear breaks in the skin, which is not to say they're not there. She had her last rabies shot roughly three months ago. Is there anything I should do to help ensure she doesn't develop any issues? is this worthy of a vet visit? Thanks.

The good news is she is current on her Rabies vaccine if it was administered 3 months ago. It would be recommended to have her evaluated, though, to ensure no additional treatment needs to be provided for any bite wounds that are present. Raccoons can also carry Canine Distemper Virus so make sure she is current on that vaccine as well.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Jasmine! If she continues to act painful or you find wounds then it would be worthy to see a Vet this weekend. Otherwise make an appointment Monday to get her Rabies boostered. Good luck!
