My dog had a C-section. Can she breed again safely without issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 6 months old

Hi. My 3 year old German Shepherd bitch had a caesarean due to uterine inertia. There were 9 puppies. Would it be safe to breed from her again in maybe a years time. Will she have to have another cesarean. Is she likely to have uterine inertia again. 5 of the puppies could t be resuscitated, the vet used diazepam on her. Looking forward to your reply. Tania

There is an increased risk of uterine rupture in patients that have had a cesarean before. The veterinarian that performed the cesarean may be able to give you a better idea Jade's relative risk for this based on the state of her uterus at the time of surgery. Dogs that have needed cesareans before also at a higher risk for complications during labor in the future. I would discuss your concerns as well as the risk of complications with your veterinarian before breeding Jade again.
