My cat has a deep wound but isn't bothered. Does he need vet stitches?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 6 months old | 10 lbs

So my cat came in a couple days ago with a wound deep enough to see his muscle, but he doesn't act like it is bothering him. Should we take him in to get stitches or just let it heal and make sure it doesn't get infected?

Poor Claws! I don't think you should let that heal without treatment and should take him to a vet. Your vet can clean the wound and then suture it so it heals properly. He will also need an antibiotic to prevent infection.

Hi, I'm Dr. Johnson. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Claws. I highly recommend, based on the photo, that you take Claws to the Vet. That is a deep wound. It will heal faster with it being closed with stitches and antibiotics. They may also want to booster Claws' rabies. I wish you the best
