What mite did I find? Is it a rabbit ear mite from my yard's wildlife?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Do you know what kind of mite this might be? We live in the country so we have lots of wildlife in our yard. We have a family of rabbits that come to visit everyday, neighbors' dogs walk through, a family of birds living in a bird box near our home. I've looked at lots of pictures on google and dog/rabbit ear mites, bird mites, etc all look the same to me. I'm hoping that we just brought one in from outside and that we aren't invested. We do not have any pets of our own.

It looks like psoroptes cuniculi - rabbit ear mite. It has a low zoonotic potential so I wouldn't be worried about you having an infestation. https://www.researchgate.net/figure/261102242_fig1_The-picture-of-Psoroptes-cuniculi-under-microscope-1610 I hope this helps! Best wishes!
