Dog has deep infected wound, dad won't go to vet. Can I treat at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 78.8 lbs

My dad won't bring him to the vet he thinks the vet will blame him and not believe that it was one of my dads tenants that did this they where looking after him for us while my dad was working in Portsmouth I begged him to bring Spring to the vet I think the parts of skin that are losing colour may be dead flesh when I clean it he doesn't feel anything he only cries when I clean deep in the wound Is there anything I can do at home my dad definitely isn't taking him the vet my heart is broken

You need to go to the vet right now, you will not het into trouble for the wound occurring as although it is bad, things like this can happen. Im sure no one meant for or tealised this had got so bad. However what you would get in trouble for is not getti g this treated. Now that you are aware of it you have a duty of care to get it proprely treated. Not doing so would be neglectful and an animal welfare case. Vets are not there to punish you or make you feel bad, thet will undestand that you dosnt realise this had happened, ans they will oy be interested with trying to help the dog. It will be ok but it needs antibiotics and antinflammatories.

It looks as though Spring's collar was embedded in his neck. It looks as if there is a lot of pus in the wound and will need antibiotics to get it healed up. Your dog would also benefit from some pain medication as well. Regardless of how this injury happened he needs to be seen by a vet. Not treating the infection could lead to an infection in the blood stream which is life threatening
