Aggressive dog eyelid cancer: Is eye removal worth it for survival?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 66 lbs

My 7 year old dog has been diagnosed with aggressive eyelid cancer. The vet wants to remove the eye but cannot tell me what her prognosis is or whether it has spread elsewhere. What are her chances of survival. I don't want to put her through unnecessary surgery if it wont change a bad outcome

I have no idea about her prognosis as it all depends on the exact type of tumour she has in the eyelid. Some tumours spread quickly whilst others linger in one area. It might be worth getting your vet to stage the cancer. You can habe a biopsy sent to the lab to get an exact diagnosis for rhe tumour then have Lymph nodes, the lungs and organs checked for metastases. If there is nothing in the other organs i would go ahead.
