Senior dog breathing hard, crackling, diarrhea, and vomiting. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 11 years and 5 months old | 48 lbs

My 3 legged, 11 yr old Chow- border collie mix has labored breathing and sometimes she makes a crackling sound. It seems more intense at night and after she hops back from going potty. I took her to the vet they did x-rays and found nothing wrong. Prescribed prednisone. She's finished meds a week ago. It seems her breathing is getting worse and has bouts of diarrhea and vomited once. What can I do and what could be wrong with her?

I am sorry missy is not feeling well. With her older age I would be concerned about heart disease, lung disease, heartworm disease and pain. Unfortunately pain can cause increase in respiratory rate. I would recommend considering a second opinion to re check her heart and lungs and start her on proper pain medications. Also the diarrhea can be secondary to the above issues. I would recommend some basic bloodwork to make sure missy doesn't have any internal problems that can lead to the diarrhea.
