Should a small hard lump on my cat's leg be biopsied first?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 2 years and 4 months old | 8 lbs

Trying for a second opinion: Is it possible to get a biopsy first on a small hard growth found on my cat's leg, rather than remove the growth entirely? We just went to our local vet who said they would need to remove the growth entirely before being able to biopsy it and diagnose- but that will cost us 1,500 dollars! Our cat is healthy and exhibits no symptoms other than a small, hard, reddish purple growth roughly half an inch large.

Thank you for providing pictures of Bunny biscuit's (LOVE her name!) growth on her leg. To get a biopsy, you typically need a good size sample of tissue and with smaller growths like hers, it makes more sense to remove it all completely now instead of having to back and remove the rest in case the growth is malignant. I would recommend following the vet's plan. I hope this helps :-)
